SB172 – Minor Medical Consent Bill
Hearing FRI May 5 @ 12:30 PM Assembly Health & Human Services Committee
This bill will allow minor children of ANY AGE to consent to “certain” medical and pharmaceutical treatments without parental consent or knowledge. This includes HIV, STD and “reproductive” drugs, vaccines and medical procedures or devices. All drugs and medical procedures come with risks. Children are generally not mature enough to fully comprehend the risk/benefit ratio or to give true informed consent. Minor children are the responsibility of their parent or guardian in all aspects until the age of majority, therefore healthcare decisions should not be removed from the scope of parental responsibility and rights. Paired with in-school health clinics, passage of SB172 puts children at risk of accepting drugs and medical procedures without understanding the potential risks involved and without the protection of their parents.
